2020 CNA-Qatar Case Competition

2020 CNA-Qatar Case Competition

Hosted by School of Business & Information Technology

What is the College of the North Atlantic Qatar Case Competition?

On March 5th and 6th, 2020, College of the North Atlantic Qatar’s School of Business and Information Technology will host its internal Case Competition with a purpose of bringing students from across the campus together in friendly competition.  This competition will give participants the opportunity to compete with their current skills while developing application-based experience for strategy development using industry best practices and technical knowledge.  Participation will serve to prepare students for their role as the next generation of technically skilled graduates of College of the North Atlantic Qatar.

This year the competition has expanding and is open to students from all areas of study including:

School of Business & Information Technology

School of Engineering Technology & Industrial Trades

School of Health Sciences

This competition is an evening and day event that involves preorganized teams of 4 to compete to build solutions for business problems using a case study for a limited period during the competition. While developing strategic solutions, teams identify the most prominent issues facing the company based on case’s key issues to help the company achieve their goals.

Teams will be judged on the presentation of their solution-based strategy for the case. Successful strategies require attention to detail, creativeness and business acumen that are outlined when presenting recommendations. Whilst competition formats differ around the world, the essence is for students to emulate industry practices and apply technical knowledge.

Case teams must be able to work together to present a cohesive recommendation to a panel of judges. However, this is only an aspect of the experiences available at a case competition.

How can I benefit from competing in the Case Competition?

All students can benefit through competition at the Case Competition, no matter which area of study you are focused on.

Besides broadening technical skills and applying industry related strategies that students will develop with a team; the Case Competition also allows them to network with other motivated and talented students while gaining strategic-based training and feedback from industry instructors and professionals from the college and Doha, through informal workshops, team meetings and formal evaluation of the team’s ideas for solutions to modern business issues.

Networking, team meetings and planning develop soft skills in leadership, negotiation, creativity and solution development. Presentations will reflect the team’s ability focus on goal setting, solution-based planning while developing your confidence in presenting business solutions.

At the College of the North Atlantic Qatar, we see participation in case competitions as an opportunity for students to gain invaluable experience that will undoubtedly be one of the highlights of their college studies, which can be drawn from for experience when working in industry.

We understand that not everyone is able to commit to the preparatory work or has the desire to compete but are still interested in the event! We have a place for you to help us out!

Roles for Volunteers:

Be a Judge!

Devoting your time to the CNAQ Case Competition as a Judge is an investment of your time for the betterment of our student competitors.  Your role will be to view up to 3 case presentations that are 20 minutes each, lead a question and answer period of 10 minutes with the competing teams, as well as to judge and record, using a rubric, the score for each team based on their case evaluation and performance.

With upwards to 20 teams, being a Judge an essential role for the success of the competition.

We encourage faculty, industry professionals and alumni to volunteer as a judge to engage with CNAQ future graduates to help them become the best that they can be, raising the quality of their applied experience through friendly competition.

Be a Minder!

Volunteering at college events is a great way to develop and demonstrate your growing leadership skills and commitment to your community!  Your role as a Minder will be to engage with the students before, during and after they begin their quest to develop the best strategy to tackle the case they are assigned during the competition.  Keeping the competition fair and equal will rest on your leadership, as you ensure all teams have equal time for analysis, take control of team materials, deliver team presentations and answer general questions of participants.

With teams competing on Thursday evening, Friday afternoon and Friday evening, there are many times for you to choose from to be involved in the execution of the case competition.  You will also see first hand, how an event of this magnitude is coordinated and learn logistical processes and project management techniques along the way.

We encourage students from all schools at CNAQ to volunteer.  A little time volunteering helps you build substantial project management and event execution experience in your resume and also enables your colleagues and instructors to get to know you. Step up by registering and become the leader you are meant to be!

Be a Moderator!

Calling all those with great presentation skills and the confidence to bring an event together at the podium!  We need your skills and time to help the CNAQ Case Competition presentations to be introduced. Using a set script, you will use your public speaking skills to introduce our competitors to the judges that will evaluate their cases.

Energetic and outgoing CNAQ students that wish to practice their public speaking and moderating skills will enjoy this volunteer opportunity. Your role as Moderator will be to introduce up to 3 case presentation teams and moderate the 10 minute Q & A period that follows each presentation. Using your leadership skills to keep the presentations to the allotted time period will be essential for the competition’s success.
